PRE-TRIP STUDY SHEET FOR EXHIBIT
AMERICA’S PATHWAYS TO INDEPENDENCE
AREA 1: Events Leading to War with England
In this exhibit students will see and participate in events leading to the American Revolutionary War including the Stamp Act and the tax on tea. In this area we will meet Samuel Adams and Paul Revere.
Vocabulary: colony, import, boycott, Parliament, broadsides, dispatch rider
AREA 2: Revolutionary War
In this exhibit students will see and participate in several key battles and the writing of the Declaration of Independence. Students will meet an American spy, and learn how America won its independence from England. In this area we will also meet General George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and others.
Vocabulary: ammunition, Patriot, Loyalist, Hessian, password, sharpshooter
AREA 3: Writing the Constitution
In this exhibit students participate in the Constitutional Convention held in Philadelphia. Issues discussed focus on how the government is to be organized. We will meet Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Edmond Randolph, William Patterson, the Georgia delegates, and others.
Vocabulary: compromise, executive branch, legislative branch, and judicial branch of government, checks and balances, amendments, separation of powers
